Fastly’s on-the-fly packaging (OTFP) delivers a faster overall viewing experience. We support just-in-time transmuxing to the most popular streaming formats (Apple’s HLS, Adobe’s HDS, and MPEG-DASH) for any resolution at any frame rate. Since we only package the portions of video that viewers play, they can start playback immediately instead of waiting for the entire file to be packaged.

Content protection


Fastly protects your video content in a number of different ways. Edge authorization tokens validate in-flight requests on our edge cloud platform before content is served to your viewers. Media encryption protects both HLS and MPEG-DASH streaming formats at rest, allowing you to cache encrypted videos. Fastly also integrates with multi-DRM providers like ExpressPlay for intellectual property protection.

Fastly supports DAI workflows through several features that provide more granular control over how your video is packaged. Timed metadata injection lets you embed metadata that signals a player to play ads and track performance or engagement at specific points in the video timeline. Content preconditioning automatically prepares your video manifests for ad insertion, removing a time-consuming bottleneck in your ad workflow.


You can also enrich viewer experiences with video delivery insights which expose server-side engagement metrics. By better understanding how your audience interacts with your video, you can implement a more profitable DAI strategy.

User experience & accessibility


We support both in-band (EIA-608 and CEA-708) and out-of-band (WebVTT) multi-language subtitle and closed caption delivery. This allows you to maximize the reach and relevance of your video content. With Trick Play, we let your viewers fast-forward and rewind almost instantaneously. You can also display scenes from the video during navigation, which helps viewers quickly locate their desired playback section for a better viewing experience.
